The Talon

Ethical Guidelines

  • Representation: Members of The Talon may not misrepresent themselves, others, or their role in the publication for reasons such as, but not limited to, free admission into student activities, late arrival to classes, etc. Misrepresentation of The Talon at school, public events, or on field trips can result in eighth hours, lunch detentions, revoking stories, revoking editorships, revoking of Quill & Scroll officer positions/membership, and/or possible removal from the staff.
  • Press Passes: Members of The Talon must properly identify themselves and carry a press pass with them when leaving class or going to get a story outside of class time. There will be a random press pass checks every week led by the Chief and Associate. There are three strikes for not having this, then an eighth hour will be given.
  • Interviewing: Anyone that does not bring a steno on an interview, falsifies or alters quotes to change what a person said, or does not present notes for fact checking when requested will be penalized with lunch detentions, eighth hour, revoking stories, revoking editorships, revoking of Quill & Scroll positions/membership, and/or possible removal from the staff. There will be a random steno checks every week led by the Chief and Associate. There are three strikes for not having this, then an eighth hour will be given. An interview
  • Plagiarism: Plagiarism is NOT tolerated. Anyone who plagiarises will get a zero for the assignment. They could lose their editorship, their Quill & Scroll officer position/ membership, lose membership on The Talon, and they could get an F for the class.

 

  • Other expectations: Substance use and abuse that affects the education and performance of a staff member is not allowed. Staff members are also expected to behave in accordance with Rockwood School District guidelines during field trips, conferences, and anytime they represent The Talon on and off campus. Violating these expectations can result in eighth hours, lunch detentions, revoking stories, revoking editorships, revoking of Quill & Scroll officer positions/membership, and/or possible removal from the staff.
  • Everyone is expected to respect their fellow staff members and adhere to Rockwood School District ethical guidelines.

    • Editors: All editors and staff members are expected to adhere to these practices. However, editors are held to a higher standard and their misconduct will result in stripping of their title/ dismissal from the staff.
